Prof. Dr. Monika Wingender is managing director of the interdisciplinary Giessen Center for Eastern European Studies (GiZo) at the Justus Liebig University Giessen. Together with Peter Haslinger (Herder-Institute Marburg) she was the spokesperson of the interdisciplinary Research Cluster “Regions of Conflict in Eastern Europe” (funded by the state of Hesse 2017-21).  She studied and completed her Dr. phil. (1994) at the Ruhr University Bochum before receiving her habilitation (2000, venia legendi in Slavic philology – Linguistics) at the Georg-August-University Göttingen. As of 2001 she is full professor for Slavic Linguistics at the Justus Liebig University Giessen.  Her main research areas are: sociolinguistics, linguistic conflict research, typologies of language conflicts, language(s) and the war in Ukraine, language politics and contacts in Eastern Europe, language situations in post-Soviet states, and typologies of Slavic standard languages.
