Prof. Dr. Anke Hilbrenner has been Professor of Eastern European History at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf since April 2022. She studied in Bonn and Bochum and received her doctorate in Bonn in 2003 with a thesis on the diaspora nationalism of the Jewish historian Simon Dubnow. She has taught at the universities of Bonn, Bremen, Munich and Göttingen. Her research focuses on Jewish history in Eastern Europe, sports history, the history of terrorism and violence and the memory of the Second World War, especially the controversial memory of the Hitler-Stalin Pact in East and West. In 2022, she published her book on terrorism "Gewalt als Sprache der Straße. Terrorism and the search for emotional community in the Russian Empire before 1917".
